Ich verwende UBUNTU-Linux und alle Beispiele dieses Buches benutzen die Software auf diesem Betriebssystem. Die Software läuft aber plattformunabhängig ebenso unter Windows oder Mac. Der Fokus der Hardware, die in diesem Buch beschrieben wird, ist ebenfalls im Niedrigkostenbereich angesiedelt. Es reicht eine digitale Spiegelreflexkamera oder eine spiegellose Systemkamera. Wichtig ist die Anschlussmöglichkeit von Wechselobjektiven, insbesondere die eines T2-Adapters. Ansonsten ist für den Einstieg keinerlei Modifikation erforderlich. Die Kamera wird am Ende eines Teleskops mittels des T2-Adapters angebracht. Notfalls tut es auch eine normale Digitalkamera mit hoher Empfindlichkeit. Dann kommt die Digiklemme zum Einsatz. Welches Teleskop man verwendet hängt nur vom Geldbeutel ab. Für die ersten Schritte in der Astrofotografie kann man getrost ein preiswertes achromatisches Linsenteleskop verwenden. Notfalls kann man dieses später auch als Leitrohr verwenden. Das Teleskop mit Kamera muss schließlich auf einem Stativ, besser einer parallaktischen Montierung befestigt werden. An dieser Stelle wird es teuer: Auch Anfänger sollten eine stabile GOTO-Montierung einer preiswerten Wackelmontierung vorziehen.
